Demo dogs for learning complex behaviors

While some cues are the result of simply positioning a dog, then marking and rewarding, others involve stringing together a chain of behaviors and are therefore more complicated to teach. It is helpful to have a demo dog who knows the behavior show the systematic steps that your students and their dogs will be taking while working toward the end behavior.

One example of this comes while teaching a “go to place” cue. When I’m teaching “go to place,” it is a combination of six different cued behaviors that chain together to form the end product, which looks like a dog running to a mat and relaxing there until released. The chain is: send out, mat target, sit, down, stay, release. Some dogs will skip a step in the chain here or there. And all will learn at a different rate.

A good demo dog will be able to show each cue individually, and then will show the steps that are taken and marked incrementally to result in the end behavior.
